trying to open Excel document but cant choose Excel 2010. I browse to it and select it however files opens in WordPad.

If you are unable to associate a file extension to an application inWindows 7, you may want to try this out:
Open regedit and navigate to:
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
Here find the .exe name which is creating problems and make sure the path is correct.
In Excel instance the registry path would be EXCEL.exe and make sure it points to correct executable
